I even took a video of my rolling and sprinting trying to get out of it, there was no way out apart from quit game.

You can always use the Darksign; that always takes you back to your last bonfire, and with 0 Humanity it shouldn't be much of a loss. The Darksign is always in your inventory because you can't drop it.
